Shonda Rhimes has once again defended her decision to kill Derek off of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Actually, she claims it was the only possible option!
Well it is Shonda’s world and we’re all just living in it. Though it happened over three months ago, Grey’s Anatomy creator, Shonda Rhimes, is nowhere near finished having to explain the decision to kill off Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) after 11 years on the series. Speaking at the Television Critics Association on Aug. 4, Shonda explained why she felt it was the only way for the series to go, and why Derek’s death authenticates he and Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) eternal love.
Shonda, of course, didn’t intent for anyone else to answer. “That would suggest the love wasn’t true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie… Meredith and Derek’s love had to remain Meredith and Derek’s love. As painful as it was for me as a storyteller, the only way to preserve what felt true to me was Derek was going to have to die for that love to remain honest.”
Thankfully, though, season 12 of the hit series will be slightly less bleak for Mer. “We do have this world in which Meredith is single, and she is living this life that she hadn’t thought she was going to be living again,” Shonda explained of what we can expect in the new episodes. Well, we’re still devastated about Derek being a goner and all, but at least the future is semi-bright for Meredith.
Do you think Derek dying was the only way for he and Meredith’s love to remain pure? Or did it ruin the show for you?
