When it comes to hair in Hollywood, subtle is out and bold, bright pink hues are in. A slew of celebrities from style stars like Nicole Richie to fashion risk takers like Jessie J have dyed their hair pink over the past several months. But who did it best?
Some hair color trends like balayage are hard to spot, then there are trends that demand to be noticed, like the pink hair look that a new celebrity seems to be trying out every day. From hair chalk dip dye that washes right out to a full head of cotton candy pink hair, we need to know whose look do you like best?
First, let’s talk color: For the very brave (like Natasha Bedingfield, who recently traded in her blonde bob for a poppier shade), pink hair dye was to thank for their bold take on the trend. To get the look, Matrix Celebrity Stylist George Papanikolas says you’ll need to pre-lighten your hair to white blonde to get the pastel shade, or a slightly less severe shade of blonde for magenta and bright pink shades.
Once you’ve dyed your hair, George says the trick is to keep the pink hue from fading fast. He recommends switching out your usual shampoo/conditioner duo for a cleansing conditioner like Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner. “[It goes] on as a conditioner, then after 5 minutes, morph into a cleanser. This way you get a gentle cleansing, and conditioning without weight and stripping,” he says. George also says to wash your hair with cold water and restore moisture by using a conditioning mask once a week.
If the thought of lightening your hair totally freaks you out, don’t worry, you can still get the look. ‘KUWTK’ star Kylie Jenner who’s always switching up her hair color, created a temporary transformation with a wig, as did model Cara Delevingne, who donned a pink wig for festival season.
Other celebrities have taken a more temporary approach to the bubblegum hue, too. We’re especially partial to Iggy Azalea’s pink ombré look, which you can easily recreate at home with a hair chalk or temporary hair dye.
Celebrities With Pink Hair — Who Wore The Bold Trend Best?
When it comes to styling, it seems the options were as varied as each celeb’s chosen shade of pink. Though the pink bob either styled straight or wavy seemed to be the go-to choice, Nicole Richie and Kaley Cuoco sported pink pixie cuts and Hilary Duff chose long, undone waves.
