It’s time! On Aug. 1, Bethe Correia will step in the Ultimate Fighting Championship octagon to challenge Ronda Rousey for her Women’s Bantamweight title! Before these UFC fighters go head-to-head in their epic bout, learn five important facts about the challenger!
Ronda Rousey, 28, has been on a tear in the UFC, defeating anyone who dares try to take her UFC Bantamweight championship. At UFC 190, she faces a threat to her undefeated streak: Bethe Correia! The 32-year-old Brazilian superstar looks to do what 11 others could not by beating Ronda! Will she make history or be the 12th victim? Before the fight goes down, here are five things to know about the woman they call “Pitbull.”
1. Bethe used to crunch numbers before she was pounding faces
Bethe’s father is a banker, reports OZY.com. She decided to follow him into the family business. Bethe graduated with an accounting degree, but she told MMAJunkie that she soon learned she was “too hyperactive for office work.”
2. She started MMA as a way to lose weight
In 2011, Bethe decided to work out to lose a few pounds. By chance, MMA champ Patricio “Pitbull” Freire was training in the same gym as Bethe one day. He heard loud smacks and investigated the source, only to find Bethe hitting the punching bag for the first time!
Patricio was so amazed at Bethe’s raw potential that he immediately recruited her to train with him and his brother, Patricky Freire (and that’s where her nickname comes from!) Despite Patricio’s enthusiasm, Bethe initially wasn’t going to compete professionally!
3. It’s her new family business
Bethe first told Patricio that she didn’t think her husband would like her getting involved in fighting. Turns out — he became of her biggest supporters! Bethe’s husband is her coach and her sister is her manager. It’s a new family business!
4. She’s also undefeated
Bethe made her professional MMA debut in 2012. Since then, she has gone 9-0, winning most of her fights by unanimous decision (with two Technical Knock Outs.) In a short time, Bethe has established herself as a deadly striker, using her boxing and jiu-jitsu techniques to cut off her opponent before going in for the kill.
5. Bethe has beaten up Ronda’s friends
Two of Bethe’s nine victories are at the expense of Ronda’s buddies. In 2014, Bethe defeated Jessamyn “The Gun” Duke at UFC 172 by unanimous decision. Four months later, in Aug. 2014, Bethe scored a TKO over “The Queen of Spades” Shayna Baszler at UFC 177. These two women are part of Ronda’s informal group called “The Four Horsewomen.” After taking those two out, Bethe has her sights set on Ronda and her UFC Bantamweight Championship.
