One Direction may have proven they’re going to be even more successful without former member Zayn Malik. The guys dropped their first single without him, ‘Drag Me Down,’ and it’s now the fastest song ever to reach to number one on iTunes!
The announcement of the new tune came out of nowhere, with no promotion, radio airplay or teaser announcement. Instead it came from the band’s official Twitter account early in the morning, where the message popped up and telling fans “HEY GUYS! So, #DragMeDown dropped earlier!” Liam Payne, 21, spoke for the band in a short video, surrounded by members Harry Styles, 21, Louis Tomlinson, 23 and Niall Horan, 21. Check out what they said!
Standing united, Liam told fans “Hey guys, our new single is out now. We hope you like it. It’s the first song from our new album that we’re been working very very hard on. We can’t wait for you to hear it” ending the brief message with “see you soon, lots of love.” The song “Drag Me Down” quickly exploded on the charts, topping iTunes in less than one hour after dropping! It also quickly topped Spotify and Billboard‘s top trending songs.
Later in the morning, the band appeared on the UK’s Capital Radio to chat about the new tune, and how the quartet already have their fifth album almost complete — their first minus Zayn Malik, 22. Niall revealed that the band has taken the “last 9 weeks off” to hit the studio. He noted that most of the new album has already been written and recorded, with the work being done in both Los Angeles and London. They even had a studio set up in a truck so they had their own mobile recording location.
The song’s title has made some fans think that it might be a swipe at former member Zayn for abandoning the band in the middle of their tour last March. But one thing is clear, it’s actually an upbeat song that seems to be dedicated to their fans. The chorus features the lyrics “You stood by me, When no one else was ever behind me, All these lights, They can’t blind me, With your love, nobody can drag me down.”
1D’s fans went crazy on social media after hearing the new tune. They’re standing by the boys and Zayn’s departure definitely isn’t going to bring the band down! As for the now solo Zayn, his reaction to it was positive. “Zayn actually thinks the song is pretty good,” a source told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “
Hollywoodlifers, what do you think of 1D’s new song? Sound off below!
