This is actually pretty shocking. Christina Applegate has just revealed that she almost scored the opportunity to play the world’s favorite Gemini vegetarian — Woods, Elle — but turned it down. Wait, what?!
How’s this for a little movie trivia? Christina Applegate, 43, had the opportunity to do the bend and snap as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, but decided to ultimately pass on the film because she was “scared” of playing the famous blonde. Scared of Elle? But how could that be?
While we can’t picture anyone but Reese Witherspoon, 39, playing Elle Woods, the character was almost immortalized by an entirely different blonde Hollywood actress. At the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie, Vacation, on July 29, Christina dished to ET Online that she was originally offered to read for the role that was eventually made famous by Reese in the hit 2001 comedy, but turned it down because she was “scared” of what it would do to her career. “The script came along my way and it was right after I had just finished, Married [With Children], and it was a blonde who in that first script is dimwitted but ends up going to Yale, or Harvard, I don’t remember,” Christina said. “I got scared of kind of repeating myself.”
Still, while the Mars Attacks! actress was hesitant to play yet another ditzy blonde like she did for 10 years as Kelly Bundy on Married… With Children, she now admits that passing on the role may not have been the wisest decision. “What a stupid move that was, right?” she lamented.
Christina Applegate: ‘Reese Deserved That’
It’s true — the rom-com, which basically launched Reese’s career into the Hollywood stratosphere, went on to spawn two sequels and a Broadway musical, and brought in more than $140 million at the international box office on its $18 million budget. Don’t worry Christina, we’d be kicking ourselves too at this point.
Regret it though she may, Christina was still very happy for her fellow blonde starlet. “Reese deserved that,” she explained. “She did a much better job than I ever could, and so that’s her life. That’s her path.” As for Christina’s path, the actress eventually went on to find her own way in Hollywood, returning to TV with roles in Jesse, Friends, Samantha Who? and Up All Night, and hitting the big screen with parts in View From the Top, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and The Sweetest Thing. This month, she’ll also star in the Vacation reboot, playing the role of Debbie Griswold alongside co-stars Ed Helms, 41, and Leslie Mann, 43. Head here for a roundup of the film’s latest reviews, and see it in theaters nationwide on July 29!
