It’s not over yet! After Jimmy Kimmel blasted the American dentist responsible for killing Cecil the lion in his monologue on July 28, supermodels Cara Delevingne, Candice Swanepoel AND Behati Prinsloo took to social media to express their outrage and disgust: ‘How dare you!’
It seems that just about everyone is heartbroken and outraged over the death of Cecil the lion — the world’s most beloved big cat. After Jimmy Kimmel, 47, used his opening monologue on July 28th’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! to condemn Walter Palmer, 55, the American dentist responsible for killing the “beautiful creature,” Victoria’s Secret models Cara Delevingne, 22, Candice Swanepole, 26, and Behati Prinsloo, 26, took to social media to publicly express their anger over the controversial trophy killing. Look out, the Angel wings are coming off!
They may be Victoria’s Secret Angels, but on July 28, Cara, Candice and Behati were far from sweet when they broached the topic of Cecil the lion. Like many of their fellow celebrities, the supermodels were disgusted by the lion’s savage murder, which took place at the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe on July 1, and had no problem expressing their anger with a series of impassioned social media posts. Cara, a known lion-lover who famously sports a big cat tattoo on her index finger, was among the first to voice her indignation on Twitter writing, “This #WalterPalmer is a poor excuse of a human being!” Ouch!
Meanwhile, Candice and Behati, both of whom hail from South Africa and Namibia respectively, took to Instagram to blast Palmer, referring to the Minnesota dentist’s act as “sick” and “disgusting.” “How dare you Walter Palmer,” exclaimed Candice. “Seeing these animals alive in their natural habitats is such a blessing, you have to be so sick to want to kill such a majestic creature of God. You come to Africa with your dollars and euros thinking you can buy power by taking advantage of Africa’s poverty and paying people to help you kill an innocent creature. Disgusting! I hope you get what you deserve.” Behati added. “Dr Walter J Palmer from Minnesota, stay out of Africa! Bored idiots who think that trophy hunting in Africa is a sport need to be stopped. How can we still allow people to hunt down these incredible animals? I want my kids to grow up seeing these animals in the wild, not on your wall. Africa needs to unite against this.”
The conflict surrounding the lion’s murder began on July 1 when Palmer traveled to Zimbabwe and paid $55,000 to participate in the hunt of the protected creature. Palmer and professional hunter Theo Bronkhorst allegedly lured Cecil out of the park and shot him with a bow and arrow. They then continued to track the lion for 40 hours before finally killing with a rifle and later skinning and beheading him to mount as a trophy. Palmer issued a statement to the media claiming that he had ‘no idea’ the lion was tagged by the Wildlife Unit of Oxford University and deeply regretted the situation. Meanwhile, in the wake of Cecil’s death, more than 280,000 people have signed an online “Justice for Cecil” petition, calling on Zimbabwe’s government to stop issuing hunting permits for endangered animals.
