‘Top Gun 2’ is pretty much happening, and we all know it wouldn’t happen without Maverick. Luckily, Tom Cruise is on board — under one very important condition.
“It would be fun,” Tom Cruise said in an interview on July 25, when asked about starring in Top Gun 2, a sequel to the 1986 hit film. Of course, the now 53-year-old actor was only 24 when shooting the original film, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t do it. While at the premiere in London for the newest Mission Impossible film, he explained just what he wouldn’t want to change this time around.
“I would like to get back into those jets,” Tom told Reuters at the London premiere of Rogue Nation. However, he’d be doing his own stunts, yet again, even though the editing could be done much better nearly 30 years later. “I don’t want any CGI jets. I want to shoot it like how we shot the first one,”
Well, let’s be honest — that’s how we want to see it happen too! Last month, we told you that the CEO of Skydance, David Ellison did confirm that the sequel is underway.
No ‘Top Gun 2’ Without Maverick
“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today,” he said at a Terminator Genisys press junket in Berlin. “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”
He also added that “there is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no ‘Top Gun’ without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.” We have to say, we absolutely agree. Are you ready for another Top Gun?
