What a horrible, horrible tragedy. One heroic mother has died trying to save her baby from being crushed by an escalator at a mall in Beijing, China. So sad.
A young mother, Xiang Liujua, 30, has sadly died trying to save her baby. She was reportedly at a shopping mall in Beijing, China, on July 27 when something terrible happened — the escalator’s platform collapsed. In the final seconds before her life was taken, she was able to toss her two-year-old son to safely, before falling into the escalator’s gap.
Surveillance footage from in a mall in Jingzhou, China, shows Xiang slowly riding up the escalator with her son in tow. When she reaches the top, they both take only a few steps forward onto the platform before it collapses. Three mall employees were seen standing at the top of the escalator and tried to pull the woman to safety.
Xiang acted fast and pushed her son forward into the arms of the other women. They were able to save the little boy, but sadly weren’t able to stop the mother from being pulled into the machine. So horrific. Unconfirmed reports said that maintenance works had been carried out on the escalator recently, according to BBC News. Workmen reportedly had just replaced the metal panel, but forgot to secure it with screws.
Many have taken to social media in China to pay tribute to the mother, according to the outlet. One user wrote, “When I saw her fall in I felt awful – but at the same time I felt how strong a mother’s love can be – during such a sudden event, the mother’s first reaction was still to push the child away from the gap,” user “I am a Promising Youth” stated.
Our thoughts are with Xiang’s family and friends during this time.
