Wait, does this mean the feud is over?! Taylor Swift took to Twitter on July 23 to issue a public apology for Nicki Minaj, admitting she misunderstood the rapper’s point about her Video Music Awards nomination rant. See what she had to say!
You know what they say about assuming, right? Taylor Swift, 25, unfortunately, learned the hard way, making the assumption that Nicki Minaj, 32, was calling her out in a rant about MTV’s Video Music Awards nominations. But once she responded to the rapper, a massive Twitter feud erupted, and spiraled far more out of control than Tay likely thought. Now, she’s issued an apology.
“I thought I was being called out,” she tweeted on July 23. “I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I’m sorry, Nicki.” Awww, we hope Nicki sees this and takes it to heart, because the two famous singers were once friends, and this would definitely be a horrible way for that relationship to be ruined! In case you forgot how this all started, when the VMA nominations were announced on July 21, Nicki’s song “Anaconda” wasn’t among the highly-coveted Video Of The Year contenders. “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year,” she tweeted, after a major rant about MTV leaving her out. Well, considering Taylor and Beyonce were the only other women nominated in the category, and Tay’s “Bad Blood” video does feature a group of “very slim” women, the 25-year-old made the assumption that Nicki’s comments were directed at her.
“I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..” she responded, at the time. The tweet led to massive backlash, with Nicki and her fans pointing out that the rapper’s rant had NOTHING to do with Taylor, and instead, was a way to criticize the media for not giving credit to black women where it is deserved.
Unfortunately, the whole thing had already gotten pretty out of control after Taylor’s first response, and even her known-nemesis, Katy Perry, got involved. “Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman…” she tweeted on July 22. Katy, of course, is referring to “Bad Blood,” a song that Taylor wrote about her, and its video, which shows women sparring off against one another. Eek.
Whatever happened in the past, though, we hope Taylor and Nicki can put this behind them. Taylor is obviously an incredibly understanding person, and it does seem like she realized her mistake, so hopefully Nicki realizes that the apology is sincere. And, hey, wouldn’t it be GREAT if we saw a collaboration at the VMAs from these two now?!
What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Will Nicki forgive Taylor? Do you think she should?
