Zach Johnson has officially entered the clubhouse — of pro-golf Open champs, that is! He beat March Leishmann and Louis Oosthuizen, dominating a four-hole playoff to win the British Open Championship.
Zach Johnson for the win! There is seriously no stopping the 39-year-old golf star. Playing to take home the gold at the 2015 British Open Championship, he gave his all on the green at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland on July 20. His hard work paid off as he totally schooled two of his toughest competitors, nabbing the coveted title as this year’s tournament champion. Congrats!
Zach, who already has a 2007 Masters Championship win under his belt, showed off his superb swing shooting a 6-under-par 66 to get to 15-under-par, then playing a 4-hole playoff in X-under to defeat Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.
“I’m just in awe right now,” the American athlete told ESPN shortly after the match. In the ceremony that followed, he told spectators, “It was divine. … I am honored to be your champion.” Zach sank a 20-foot par on his final hole of regulation to get to 15-under, then relaxed for a glorious 80 minutes, waiting for Louis and then Marc to join him. Zach torched Louis’ efforts by one shot and Marc by three in the playoff.
Louis, who won this tourney the last time it was at St. Andrews, somehow didn’t make a 9-foot birdie putt on the final playoff hole — basically handing the the trophy to Zach.
The winner sank a birdie putt of about 20 feet on the 18th hole, which implored a fist pump from him and an adorable little victory jig from his quirky (and coordinated!) caddie, Damon Green — who you can meet in all his glory in the hilarious video above.
