Kylie Jenner’s contouring is always on fleek, but we know what you’re probably thinking, it’s a bit too much for us non-famous peeps on an average day. So, how can you achieve a more natural yet still glamorous contour look? We have the answer!
We had the pleasure of learning the best tips to getting a “natural contour” look from celebrity makeup artist Tedrick Lamar and we can’t wait to share his secrets with you! We’ve put together the top five tricks we think are crucial to achieving the most natural Kylie Jenner inspired contour look! Grab your beauty blender and read on!
Tip #1) Prep with moisturizer — Do not use any product with retinal! This ingredient will prevent your makeup from sitting smoothly on your skin and can cause your foundation to roll. If you have dry skin, a face oil is your best bet! Just pat it on lightly and your makeup will just glide on nicely. If your face is on the drier side, grab a combination moisturizer and use that to prep!
Tip #2) Use a beauty blender — You can pretty much use this genius tool for every step to achieve a natural contour! Using a blender will give you that flawless, airbrushed look because it absorbs water and therefore, blends products perfectly. Mini-tip — stay away from the knockoff versions, they are usually harder, which means they don’t absorb as much water and don’t work as well as the patented, pink ones! Tip #3) Feel your face before starting — Getting familiar with your face shape is a crucial step before starting to apply products. It’s important to know where you want to place your darker colors. For example: Forehead shape — if you have a larger forehead, you can go heavier with the bronzer around your hair-line but if you have smaller forehead, you shouldn’t contour too much around the hair-line, as it will make your forehead appear smaller. Also, feel for your cheekbones instead of sucking in your cheeks. This will help you to know exactly where to place your the darker tones!
Tip #4) Picking color shades — Most people are under the assumption that you just pick one light color and one dark color to create a contour look, but we learned a good trick to picking out the correct colors. Figure out your exact face color and then select one product that is 3 shades lighter than that for the highlighting portion of your contour and then select one product that is 3 shades darker for the sculpting/bronzing portion of your look. To keep the look as natural as possible, select products that are light, so instead of using thick concealers to highlight and bronze, try using the same lightweight foundation for the entire look (the same product in the two different shades.)
Tip #5) Dewy vs. Matte finish — A dewy finish will help create a more natural look, but if you have oily prone skin, you may be scared to use dewy products. You can use matte products and use an illuminating powder to complete your look instead!
