Ready to get your first look at the fall’s most intense new drama? The first trailer for ‘The Bastard Executioner’ aired on July 12, and we are hungry for more. Prepare yourselves for a lot of bloodshed. Click to WATCH!

The Bastard Executioner is one of the most highly-anticipated shows of the fall TV season. We’ve all been wondering how Kurt Sutter will be able to top his success with Sons of Anarchy, and The Bastard Executioner might just be the creator’s second golden ticket. The first footage of the period drama was released on July 12, previewing a season full of blood and terrifying danger.

Kurt is giving us a break from the motorcycles and taking us into the medieval world with The Bastard Executioner. The show is set in the early 14th century and follows a warrior knight named Wilkin Brattle, who vows to give up his sword after coming face-to-face with the horrors of war. However, he’s eventually forced to become the executioner and wield the bloodiest sword in the land.

In the trailer, we see Wilkin wield that deadly sword on a unfortunate victim in a very Game of Thrones-type of way. (We’re having a lot of flashbacks of Ned Stark’s execution right now. Bear with us.) Newcomer Lee Jones landed the lead role of Wilkin. True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and Sons of Anarchy’s Katey Sagal also make quick appearances in the trailer. The series also stars Darren Evans, Elen Rhys, Sam Spruell, Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Timothy V. MurphyBrian F. O’Byrne, and Kyle Rees

Kurt, who created the brilliant Sons of Anarchy, is excited about the promising new series, especially for the opportunity to weave “fact and fiction” together. “I love history. I love theology. I love blood. It’s been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements,” Kurt said when the series was announced, according to E! Online. “And with this extraordinary cast—Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal and newcomer Lee Jones—this world explodes on screen. I love working with FX and Fox21TVS. They’ve been my family for 15 years. They not only tolerate me, they embrace my extremely disturbing storytelling sensibilities.”

The footage was initially aired at Comic-Con on July 12, and a trailer later premiered during The Strain’s season premiere on FX. The show will premiere in the fall on FX.
