Serena Williams and Garbiñe Muguruza went face-to-face in the Wimbledon women’s singles finals on July 11, and it was Serena reigned supreme. Congrats, Serena!
Talk about a battle of the ladies! Serena Williams, 33, and Garbiñe Muguruza, 21, met up in the Wimbledon women’s singles finals, and it was intense. After exciting rounds of tennis, Serena was the one who came out on top. This is her sixth Wimbledon title! It’s time to celebrate, Serena!
This Wimbledon finals match-up was a quick one. Serena beat Garbine 6-4 in both rounds to secure her epic win. Garbine fought hard against Serena, but it just wasn’t enough to beat the seasoned pro. Serena gave major kudos to Garbine for her efforts in a post-match interview.
“It feels so good, it’s been a little while and I really appreciate holding it [the trophy],” Serena said, according to The Guardian. “Garbine played so well, I didn’t know it was over – you’ll be holding this trophy very soon, believe me…I’m just happy it was such a great match. I can’t believe I’m standing here with another ‘Serena Slam’. There was definitely a bit of pressure towards the end.”
Both Serena and Garbine’s Wimbledon runs have been one long victory lap. Serena beat Timea Babos 6-4 in a July 1 face-off. However, she had her work cut out for her against Heather Watson. Heather beat Serena in the second round of the July 4 match and was up 3-0 in the final set. However, Serena pulled out a win. Serena would go on to beat her sister, Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova before going up against Garbine in the final match.
This isn’t the first time Serena and Garbine have played against each other. Garbine beat Serena in the quarterfinals of the 2014 French Open. Serena was the no. 1 ranked player and defending champion of the French Open. Before Serena and Garbine faced off, Serena was ranked no. 1 and Garbine was ranked no. 20.
