Ready your papes– and do the ‘Uptown Funk!’ Some genius mashed up Bruno Mars’ smash song with the dancetastic movie, ‘Newsies,’ and it is toe-tapping perfection.
In Newsies, the 1992 film from Disney, Christian Bale leads the way for a misfit group of newsboys at the end of the 19th century during what was known as the Newsboys Strike of 1899. So, basically the exact opposite of Bruno Mars, right? Well, because the Internet is a glorious place, a YouTube user replaced the music during one of the movie’s biggest dance numbers with “Uptown Funk,” and you genuinely will not believe that it isn’t exactly what the film had intended. Trust us.
Uptown funk really is gonna give it to ya. The actual song in the film, called “Seize the Day,” is a major turning point in the movie where the boys, ya know, seize the day (as the title loosely suggests), and they decide they’ll no longer get bulldozed by the rich and powerful.
“Uptown Funk,” meanwhile, is about, well, we’re not exactly sure. Dancing and all around funkiness, in the upper sector of town, perhaps? Regardless of the varying content, mash the two things up and you’ve got a newsboy dance break that is basically heaven.
This heavenly creation isn’t the first we’ve seen of Newsies recently, either. In fact, the movie-musical has had a major resurgence in the past couple years. In 2012, a musical of the same name opened on Broadway (starring Smash star Jeremy Jordan!) and it went on to win two Tony Awards. It was also nominated for the very coveted Best Musical award. The show ran for two years, and just over 1,000 performances. Not bad for a few scrappy, newspaper-slinging boys from Houston to Harlem, right?
What do you think of the mashup? Do you think Bruno’s song fits the scene as perfectly as we do?
