Shots fired! Fans started a Twitter campaign for Zayn Malik to call off his engagement to Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards, and it didn’t take long for him to take to social media to respond!
One Direction fans haven’t been very happy with Zayn Malik since he left the group in March, but things reached a new level when they attacked his love life via Twitter. The hashtag, #CANCELYOURENGAGEMENTZAYN, trended nationwide all day on July 7, but in classic Zayn fashion, he didn’t just sit back and watch that happen—he posted on Twitter himself in response!
See if you can figure this one out: instead of lashing out at the fans who clearly don’t want Zayn to get hitched, his response tweet involved a picture—ahem, a shirtless selfie to be exact —with a rather mysterious caption: “Need the sunnies today,” the singer wrote. According to him, he apparently needs sunglasses…could this be in reference to the shade the Internet is throwing his way?

Oddly enough, once Zayn responded, it seemed as though fans began taking a stand to protect the former 1D member and his Little Mix fiance Perrie Edwards, saying the hashtag is “disrespectful” and “messed up.” Some fans even started trying to make a new, nicer hashtag #CantWaitForYourWeddingZayn trend instead! Who knows if the fans will reach an agreement on the relationship!
Perhaps the original hashtag started because Zayn and Perrie have been engaged for almost two years and fans couldn’t wait any longer. But, Perrie has also been blamed for Zayn’s departure from the band, so the hashtag could be a sense of hope that if the engagement does in fact end, Zayn will return to One Direction. Either way, we don’t think it’s very nice that fans want to break the couple up!
There has certainly been a lot of questioning from fans about Zayn and Perrie’s relationship, but the two have used their social media accounts to prove everyone wrong. In an interview with UK radio station Capital FM last month, Perrie even revealed when she’ll marry Zayn!
The Little Mix singer played a game called “Five Questions For,” where she was faced with the burning question that’s on everyone’s minds and gave a very stern answer. “I’m sick of being asked, ‘When is the wedding? When is the wedding?’” Once she said that, she looked right into the camera and declared, “I’ll get married when I’m bloody ready!”
Now that Zayn is no longer part of 1D, it’s Perrie’s schedule that is putting a hold on wedding plans. “Me and Zayn want it to be perfect, so as soon as I have a bit of time we’ll plan it,” Perrie explained to The Sun. “I doubt it will be this summer — but I’ll let you know!” Unfortunately, it looks like we still don’t have our answer!
Despite the lengthy engagement and uncertainty of wedding plans, it’s not very fair for fans to demand they call it off—and if we’re getting the right message from Zayn’s tweet, he feels the same way!
What do you think of the hashtag #CANCELYOURENGAGEMENTZAYN, HollywoodLifers? Do you think Zayn and Perrie should call off their engagement?
