It’s truly the end of an era on ‘Sesame Street.’ Sonia Manzana, who is one of the most beloved faces on the show, is retiring after dedicating 44 years of her life to the series. Where has our childhood gone?!

Sonia Manzano, 65, who hands down is one of the most-loved people on TV, is exiting Sesame Street after 44 remarkable years. For children who had grown up watching the show, her character “Maria” was a key role in their childhood. Bye Maria, we will miss you!

After four decades, Sonia — aka Maria, is getting off the streets. She made the announcement on June 29 at the American Library Association Annual Conference. The actress made her big debut back in 1971, and has since added Sesame Street writer to her resume. She also earned 15 Daytime Emmy Awards for that job!

“As a kid there was always a lot of chaos going on around me and I found a certain comfort in television sometimes,” she previously told Archive of American Television back in 2004. “I hope that I can be remembered as the person who created a moment of safety for a child watching.” Well, we think she did just that!

Although Sesame Street hasn’t released an official announcement of her departure yet, fans on Twitter are already mourning the loss of her beloved character.

Good luck Sonia on your future endeavors!
