Coming up against Yulia Putintseva, Venus Williams did her best to defeat her opponent in one of the most intense matches Wimbledon has ever seen. After a long tie, Venus came out on top with a 7-6 score. Congrats!
Venus Williams, 35, went face to face with a much younger competitor during today’s match at Wimbledon 2015: 20-year-old Yulia Putintseva from Russia. This is the second time that Venus and Yulia have played each other during the famed tennis tournament. Having already defeated Yulia during their first match, Venus decided she’d like to do it all over again. Read on for all the details on Venus’ big July 1 win, which was completed just under two hours!
Those Williams sisters are sure on a roll! Moments after little sib, Serena Williams, 33, dominated Timea Babos 6-4 on a nearby court, Venus beat Yulia in one epic duel. Midway through the match, the two girls were tied. Finally, the tie was broken by V. Phew.
After the set, Venus described the experience, saying: “It’s good to have good competition. Clearly, [Yulia] is on the rise on this tour.” On the rise indeed — but hasn’t yet elevated to Venus’ hard-won status. But hey, let’s not forget that Miss Williams has a whopping 15 years on the rookie athlete. Yulia’s still got some time!
Seeded 16th at Wimbledon this year, Venus made it known that she wanted to up the ante this year giving it her all during a dominating match on the opening day of the series. The game ended with a double bagel finish against fellow American Madison Brengle. She hit 29 winners and 13 unforced errors to finalize the match 6-0, 6-0 in under an hour.
Yulia finished her match in straight sets, too. She wiped the floor with Marina Erakovic 7-6, 7-5 in a duel where she fired five aces, 31 inners and 26 unforced errors to conclude out the game in two hours and 13 minutes. Yu-Yu unfortunately doesn’t yet have what it takes to compete with Venus. Better luck next time, girl!
