They made it a decade together before calling it quits. Ben Affleck, 42, and Jennifer Garner, 43, announced their plans to divorce on June 30, one day after they celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. It almost seemed like they planned it — and they did! HollywoodLife.com has EXCLUSIVELY learned the strategy behind Ben and Jennifer’s announcement and why the timing was done to help out his career!
Ben and Jennifer, while rumored to be on the rocks for a while, confirmed they were indeed divorcing. After reportedly struggling to save their marriage for years, why did the couple pick now to break-up? The reason was – Batman! Ben has a major movie coming out in 2016, and sources EXCLUSIVELY tell HollywoodLife.com that they decided to split-up now and get it over with. If they had waited any longer, Ben would have been dogged by questions about the split while promoting what may be his biggest blockbuster yet.
“It’s better to make this a story now,” a source tells HollywoodLife.com, “so he doesn’t have to deal with it when [Batman V Superman] hits theaters.” Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for a March 25, 2016 release, so there’s close to ten months of stress and press for Ben and Jennifer. It sounds like the couple figures that by the time the move hits the theaters, the buzz over their break-up will have died down.
Ben and Jennifer’s marriage woes have been going on for years, and the source tells HollywoodLife.com that things hit a “point of no return” around the time Ben was filming Gone Girl. Instead of announcing their divorce around that movie, the couple waited until the time was right — and that time was now!
Though the couple timed the announcement to help out Ben’s career, there were many reasons why they couldn’t stay married any longer. The couple fought over Jen bringing their kids on set of Ben’s movies and Ben hated how he had to get rid of friends for her. Despite desperate attempts to salvage their relationship, the two realized that it was over.
Why did Ben and Jen wait until the day after their 10 th Wedding Anniversary to announce their support? Cerfiried Family Law Specialist, Kelly Chang Rickert, Esq., EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.com that in California, “a 10-year marriage is ‘long-term’ which basically allows for courts to retain indefinite jurisdiction over the issue of spousal support.” This means that the court is able to make decisions regarding matters between Ben and Jen, but after officially making it 10 years, Kelly thinks that “it signifies [that] they really tried” to make it work.
