FIFA is under fire! Ahead of the 2015 Women’s World Cup semi-final match, the organization posted an article about U.S. soccer star Alex Morgan, controversially referencing her looks while describing her — and fans are outraged!
Alex Morgan, 25, is one of the stars of the United States’ Women’s World Cup soccer team, but some people are, unfortunately, paying more attention to the way she looks than her stellar skills on the field. Even FIFA, the organization responsible for the tournament, described the soccer star in a controversial way before the United States’ game against Germany on June 30, and they definitely felt the backlash on Twitter.
“Alex Morgan is one of the most popular players in USA women’s football,” a FIFA.com article read. “A talented goalscorer with a style that is very easy on the eye and good looks to match, she is nothing short of a media phenomenon.” The decision to reference Alex’s “good looks” is what had fans so outraged.
Many social media users immediately fired back, questioning whether or not FIFA would comment on male soccer stars’, like Cristiano Rinaldo or David Beckham’s looks, in an article about one of them (to be fair, several also remarked that those guys’ looks are referenced by women…and often).
“FIFA doesn’t take Morgan seriously if they’d rather talk about her looks than her skills,” one responder wrote. “Dare I say – there’s more to Alex Morgan than her looks,” another added. “Her quick speed, crazy angles, & cool calm finishing are overlooked.” Amen! Earlier in the World Cup series, FIFA was once again criticized for using male pronouns in a live match tracker during a game between Canada and China.
Alex probably isn’t paying too much attention to how the press is describing her, though — she has bigger things to focus on! Her team had a HUGE victory in their semi-final match against Germany on June 30, winning 2-0 and advancing to the finals on July 5. Whoever won Tuesday’s game was expected to be the favorite to take it all home against the winner of July 1’s Japan/England match, so this was definitely a big one for the U.S.!
Alex Morgan is so overrated… if people actually knew soccer they would judge a player based of talent, not looks

Many ppl say “Alex Morgan n Christen Press r hot”. They r here to play, not show off. They r focusing on their talents, not looks. #USWNT :)

Kind of sad that some people only talk about Alex Morgan’s looks instead of how well she plays…

HollywoodLifers, do you think FIFA was wrong in the way it described Alex?
