Did Ben Affleck not put enough elbow grease into his marriage with Jennifer Garner? After a decade of marriage, the couple called it quits — even though Jen made a huge effort to keep it together for the sake of their children.
With a heartbreaking June 30 divorce announcement, Ben Affleck, 42, and Jennifer Garner, 43, put an end to their 10-year union that has left us questioning whether or not love is even real. (As in, if Bennifer can’t make it work, who the hell can?) While the couple prepare to say buh-bye to married life, a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that Jen is reeling over the fact that Ben simply “didn’t fight hard enough” for the relationship to stay in tact — even for their kids.
“Ben has not been living at home for a couple months, but they have been adamant that they keep the family together for the sake of the children. They didn’t want to fracture their world. So they went to counseling and tried to make changes in their lives to heal their marriage but it wasn’t enough,” a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “It just didn’t seem like Ben could do enough — and truthfully maybe he didn’t want to. Jen felt his heart wasn’t in it.”
As the great poet, Selena Gomez, once said: “the heart wants what it wants” — and Ben’s obvi did not want Jen. “Jen is furious with Ben for not being the man she wanted him to be. She thought he could have fought harder to save their marriage,” the source says. “You have to give Jen credit. She really put her career, which was sizzling at the time, on hold when she became a mom.”
Choosing motherhood over superstardom was a huge sacrifice for the mom-of-three; one that Ben just might have failed to understand. “Taking care of those precious children as well as their home became her primary career with acting a distant second,” our insider adds. “Not to mention, she felt like she had another child in Ben. She wanted Ben to share the load fifty-fifty but it never seemed to even out.”
After months of speculation that love was lost between the two, Jen and Ben finally confirmed the awful news no one ever wanted to hear in a joint statement.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the now-estranged couple explained. “We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.” Difficult, indeed.
