We still can’t believe Ben and Jen are getting divorced, but according to various reports and HollywoodLife.com sources, their split was a long time coming. For years, there was constant fighting, couples therapy sessions, and ‘last ditch’ efforts to save the marriage.
Another Hollywood couple has called it quits. This time, it’s Ben Affleck, 42, and Jennifer Garner, 43. After 10 years of marriage, they have decided to pull the plug on their romance and go their separate ways. It may seem shocking, but Ben and Jen have been having problems for years. Find out what went wrong!
Rumblings of relationship troubles first emerged when Ben won an Oscar for directing Argo. “Jen wanted to bring the kids to visit him [on set] that summer, and he said no,” a source told OK! magazine in May. “This turned into a very big rift because it was another two months before he came home and saw anyone.” And one month before that, Jen celebrated her April 17 birthday alone, while Ben was seen on a solo trip in Canada without his wedding ring. So when did the trouble start?
Well, according to a neighbor, Ben and Jen, who are parents to Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3, have lived separate lives for years. “They had good times when they were living in Brentwood and hanging at Matt [Damon]’s house,” an insider told the New York Daily News in late May. “Things were definitely a lot more upbeat and optimistic then. Now there’s friction and tension between them. They’re like two ships passing in the night.”
“Ben only likes things his way or no way,” NY Daily News’ insider further explained. “He’s as stubborn as a mule. He’s not exactly flexible. He is prone to moodiness when he doesn’t get his way. Dealing with him is not a walk in the park.” Poor Jen!
“[They’ve] had problems from the very beginning,” Us Weekly reported in May, citing Ben’s “workaholic” nature and “many vices” as reasons they have had problems. One of those vices is likely the actor’s gambling, which, as previously reported, has been a source of tension between the two for years.
They tried couples therapy and “last ditch” efforts to save the marriage, according to this week’s issue of Star magazine, but it wasn’t enough.
Ben Affleck Has Been Living At Hotel Bel-Air
And when their heated arguments became too much to bear, Ben would seek solace at Hotel Bel-Air in LA, which is where he’s been staying for the last few weeks. On June 20, moving trucks were spotted outside Ben and Jen’s home.
So why now? Ben allegedly wanted there to be enough time for the news to die down before he has to promote Batman v Superman (it premieres on March 25, 2016) and the other movies he has coming out next year, like Suicide Squad. Apparently, they only stuck it out as long as they did because of the kids.
“They wanted to save the marriage for the kids,” an insider spilled to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “That was the priority! And when certain holidays and birthdays came about, they thought about their relationship with more urgency.”
Unfortunately, the good must have outweighed the bad. Ben and Jen released the following statement to HollywoodLife.com on June 30, one day after their tenth wedding anniversary:
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.”
And now, fans are freaking out.
