Supreme Court Blocks Measures That Would Force Texas Abortion Clinics To Close

Wow — this is huge. The Supreme Court allowed ten Texas abortion clinics to remain open until the court decides whether to hear the clinics’ appeal. Their decision could lead to the biggest abortion case in nearly 25 years!

The court’s big decision to refuse to enforce restrictions that would force 10 abortion clinics to close came on June 29. The vote was 5 to 4, and the order will stand until the court decides whether to hear the clinics’ appeal of the lower court ruling — find out more!

Regulations were set in place to shut down 10 Texas abortion clinics while they appealed to the Supreme Court, but the justices just voted 5-4 to grant an emergency appeal in order to keep them open until the final appeal, which would take place no earlier than fall. The fact that the vote turned out the way it did is a huge indication that the justices will hear the full appeal, which makes this a huge deal!

Lawyers for abortion providers fought in the emergency application, explaining what would happen if the contested provisions took effect. They said, “This would amount to a more than 75 percent reduction in Texas abortion facilities in just a two-year period, creating a severe shortage of safe and legal abortion services in a state that is home to more than five million reproductive–age women.”

Texas had 41 abortion clinics in 2012 and only 19 remain in the state today, and the clinics claimed that enforcing the new regulations would lead to a second major wave of clinic closures statewide — the regulations would have left the state with no clinic west of San Antonio.
