Yes, it’s happening — ‘Top Gun 2’ has been confirmed 30 years after the original film was released in 1986. But, will it’s star, Tom Cruise, return, too?
Tom Cruise, 52, has always loved making a great action flick, and it all stems back to his iconic role as Maverick in the classic Top Gun. Now that a sequel to the film has been announced, will Maverick put on his helmet and get back into the pilot seat after all these years?
The answer is… YES! Tom Cruise will absolutely be a part of Top Gun 2, reports our sister site, Variety. Although Skydance CEO David Ellison did not say Tom’s name when announcing the highly anticipated sequel, he did say that Maverick will have an “amazing role” in the film. How exciting!
“There is no ‘Top Gun’ without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” he explained, much to everyone’s delight. There is no reason for Tom not to reprise the role, as he has never been one to shy away from a fantastic action film. It David Ellison is right and the role is as amazing as he says, Tom must be just as excited as everyone else.
As for what the film would revolve around, the Skydance CEO revealed, “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters… It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.” Wouldn’t it be great to see what Maverick is up to these days? After 30 years in the force, he’s likely pretty high up — with lots of young blood to watch over.
