Wow — Richard Matt, one of the prisoners who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility, has reportedly been shot and KILLED by police!
After an intense, 20-day manhunt, Richard Matt has been caught by police! The prisoner, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6, was reportedly shot and killed by cops in the woods on June 26. But David Sweat, who escaped with Richard, is still on the run!
Police got hot on the prisoners’ trail after the men attempted to carjack a camper, and the driver called 911 when he heard gunshots. Hours before shooting the fugitive, police confirmed they found Richard’s DNA in a Malone, New York cabin, just 10 miles north of where they eventually shot him. He allegedly died from the shot, law enforcement sources claim, and the search is still on for David Sweat.
Police are looking for David in a woodsy area around Lake Titus, which is 50 miles west of the prison where the men escaped from in Dannemora, New York earlier this month. Last week, DNA was found in a different cabin about 13 miles south of Malone, so the men hadn’t gotten very far.
Also this week, a prison guard was suspended without pay for sneaking Richard and David tools, which eventually helped them escape, while they were in the correctional facility. Joyce Mitchell, an industrial training supervisor at the Clinton Correctional Facility, was arrested on June 12 and charged with two felonies, Promoting Prison Contraband and Criminal Facilitation, for her role in helping Richard and David escape.
The search for David is now more intense than ever, with more than 1,000 law enforcement officers on the lookout to pursue new leads. He had been serving a life sentence for killing a sheriff’s deputy in 2002, while Richard was serving 25 years to life for kidnapping and beating a man to death in 1997. It is certainly no surprise that this manhunt is ending in a shootout, as these men are obviously very dangerous.
HollywoodLife.com will keep you updated as the search continues.
