Looking real good, Mr. Diggs. Taye Diggs is next in line to step into the high, high heels of Hedwig in ‘Hedwig & The Angry Inch’ on Broadway, and we’ve now got our first peek at his glamorous new look!
On July 22, Taye Diggs will become the sixth person to play Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway. He will work it out for a limited 12 week run, marking his first time on a Broadway stage in over a decade. However, judging by his first publicity shot for the grungy rock musical, it’s safe to say Taye has not lost his Broadway groove. You need to see this pic!
Taye will take over the role from current star Darren Criss, following a string of ridiculously talented dudes including Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and Neil Patrick Harris, who won a Tony Award for the role in 2014.
Thrillingly, Taye will be the first African American actor to play Hedwig, a German rockstar who has undergone a botched gender reassignment surgery (hence the “angry inch”). “Hedwig is the role of a lifetime,” Taye told People. “I’m looking forward to being challenged performance-wise on many levels, as well as being humbled by the musical’s social implications. I also like wearing nail polish.”
Well, we have to say, we like you wearing nail polish, too. Taye’s last appearance on Broadway was in the long running blockbuster, Wicked, way back in 2004, in which he starred opposite then-wife Idina Menzel. He has since gone on to star in films and television shows including How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Best Man and Private Practice. He currently stars on the TNT series, Murder in the First.
What do you think of Taye’s Hedwig? Do you plan to see him in the role?
