Ted and Johnny are back for another Bostonian adventure, and they’re bringing Amanda Seyfried along for the ride. ‘Ted 2’ is finally hitting theaters, and it’s even more star-studded and absurd than the first.
Seth MacFarlane‘s ode to a talking teddy bear and his best friend/thunder buddy (Mark Wahlberg) continues after Ted’s beautiful and elaborate wedding to Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth), when the couple runs into a little trouble. Ted’s embroiled in a massive civil rights case when the state tries to argue he’s not an actual person, but personal property. What’s a bear to do?
Let’s be straight from the beginning. While the film is packed with plenty of laugh out loud moments in typical Seth MacFarlane fashion, it ultimately falls flat after a few too many sexist, racist and homophobic references…in typical Seth MacFarlane fashion.
The Family Guy visionary is clearly an artist, but he sometimes becomes a victim of his own tropes. The opening sequence is beautiful, and a must-see! But having Ted and Johnny sneak into Tom Brady‘s house into the middle of the night to steal his sperm isn’t funny — it’s rape. The film continues this teetering balance throughout its run, and it often manages to tip in the wrong direction.
However, there’s plenty to love about the film. The chemistry between Johnny and Samantha (Amanda Seyfried), Ted’s lawyer, is undeniable. If you’re wondering what happened to Mila Kunis, it’s explained early on; they got divorced because she was upset about all the weed smoking. But Johnny and Sam have a will-they-won’t-they heat that’s cute and fun to watch. Whoever thought these two would be good together on screen?
The constant parade of celebrity appearances doesn’t hurt either. Patrick Warburton returns as their pal Guy, who’s as nonchalant and gruff as ever. Unfortunately, BF Ryan Reynolds isn’t in the picture anymore. Mad Men‘s John Slattery and Morgan Freeman appear as powerful lawyers, while Giovanni Ribisi resumes his role as the creepy as hell Donny — and Flash Gordon just being Flash Gordon, of course. Look out for even more celebs. I’m not giving these hilarious moments away!
If you’re a Seth MacFarlane fan and you’re looking for more of the same comedy, Ted 2 is your jam. Ted 2 hits theaters on Friday, June 26. Let us know what you think, HollywoodLifers!
