Izzie, is that you? Fans have wondered for years if and when we’d see Katherine Heigl return to ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Well, the cat is out of the bag– and Katherine herself is speaking up!
Pretty much since the day Katherine Heigl left Grey’s Anatomy in 2010, the question has loomed as to whether she would return to the series. Well, following the death of McDreamy (meaning the exit of series star Patrick Dempsey), the show’s upcoming season 12 seems as good a time as any to bring back some familiar faces, right? On June 22, Katherine set the record straight as to whether audiences can expect to see her when the long running series returns to ABC in the fall.
Let’s get right to it: is there any truth to the rumblings that Izzie will be in the new season of Grey’s? “There is not,” Katherine told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m sorry,” she added, probably realizing that she just crushed a dream nearly five years in the making.
So, nothing is planned, but perhaps Katherine would return to the series in the future. Or, perhaps not. When asked whether she’d be interested in returning, Katherine said, “I think that… I don’t know how to answer that, I’m sorry.” If that sounds a bit awkward to you, you’re right. It was totally awkward.
Following her departure, it was rumored that the reason Katherine exited the show was actually due to tensions with costar Ellen Pompeo and series creator Shonda Rhimes. Certainly, Katherine’s discomfort when asked about wanting to return didn’t dismiss those theories.
However, whatever the case may be, Katherine remains grateful for the time she had on the show. “It’s been this incredible thing,” she explained. “It was just this incredible experience for me. It changed the course of my life and career and I couldn’t be more grateful. I just hope it goes for as long as they all want it to.”
Would you want Katherine to return to Grey‘s?
