Don Lemon certainly knows how to press people’s buttons! The CNN anchor ignited rage among viewers when he held up a sign with the N-word strewn across it during the middle of a news broadcast.
Did Don Lemon, 49, just take things a bit too far? The outspoken media personality candidly asked viewers of his show, CNN Tonight, if they were insulted by an image of the N-word. His controversial questioning was brought up after acknowledging the tragic Charleston Church Shooting that took place on June 17 — a racially charged hate crime. Read on for more details about Mr. Lemon’s shocking TV moment!
Before flashing a big, bolded N-word to the camera, Don touched on the controversy surrounding the Confederate flag after the horrific shooting at Charleston, SC’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church — an establishment historically known for its black congregation.
The 49-year-old picked up a Confederate flag and said, “This is what America is talking about right now. Does this offend you? It’s a Confederate flag. Is it a symbol of Southern pride or a symbol of hate?”
“And then, what about this?” Don continued, raising a large black sign with the word “n—-r” in white lettering. “Does this offend you? This word. President [Barack] Obama said it out loud in an interview and a lot of people are shocked.” Take a look for yourself in the clip above — and make your own judgments about Don’s on-screen scandal.
After the alleged attacker, Dylann Roff, 21, killed 9 people during a group Bible Study, many South Carolinians are debating whether or not it is insensitive to keep the Confederate flag flying in the former slave state. Don compared the discourse to Obama’s use of the N-word in a recent interview — simply wondering if the racial slight was just as abominable or just as acceptable.
