When it comes to summer hairstyling, undone, beachy waves are hands down the coolest look. But summer’s best hair can be miserable to recreate if you have to use a curling iron when it’s 90 degrees out. Check out our favorite salt sprays (and tips) to achieving mermaid-approved hair sans heat.
Whether you have long, golden locks like Blake Lively or a shorter, darker style like Jessica Alba, textured waves are a sexy look that works on every hair length and color. If you were blessed with natural curls, just pick up one of our beachy wave favorites, spritz and go. But, if like me, your hair would rather hang straight, try one of these tricks for just-off-the-beach waves.
The Method: If your hair is on the straighter side but will hold a curl, simply spraying sea salt spray onto damp hair and creating tight twists, moving away from the face, will help your hair to dry with more of a wave. If your hair needs more coaxing than that, wait to spray your hair with salt spray until it’s 95% dry, then section your hair off into braids (you can do simple pigtails, or separate your hair into several braids). Wait until your hair is completely dry, or sleep on the braids and take them out in the morning, finishing with hairspray for all-day hold.
A Classic Favorite: When I was in middle school, the only product I knew of to get beachy waves (and my favorite styling product) was the John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Waves Sea Salt Spray. Since then, it’s been through several reformulations, and still remains one of my favorites for getting textured, undone waves.

The New Way To Wave: My go-to spray for undone waves is the Fudge Urban Sea Salt Spray. It smells like a coconut, beachy dream, and leaves my hair with undone waves that aren’t sticky or greasy. If you’re styling your hair into textured waves before spending the day outside, Alterna Bamboo Ocean Waves Tousled Texture Spray contains ingredients that protect hair from UVA/UVB damage, as well as drying damage from the ocean and pool.
Have you tried any of these beachy waves sprays, HollywoodLifers? Will you be putting aside your heat styling tools for the summer?
