Uh-oh! Seattle Sounders soccer player Clint Dempsey got into trouble during the U.S. Open cup match with the Portland Timbers. Angry over a ref’s decision, Clint grabbed the official’s notebook and tore it up — which got him kicked out of the game!
Clint Dempsey should know better! The 32-year old soccer star totally lost his cool during a match between his Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers in the U.S. Open Cup. After one of his teammates was given a red card, Clint earned a red card of his own after he grabbed the ref’s notebook and tore it to pieces!
At the 111th minute of the fourth round match of the US Open Cup, taking place on June 16, Seattle Sounders player Michael Aziri was given a red card for apparently hitting a Portland player in the face with his elbow, reports the NY Daily News. Furious and frustrated, Clint walked over to the ref and grab’s the official’s notebook. He tossed it before picking it up and shredding it!
You know that wasn’t going to fly! Clint was about to get a yellow card for arguing with the ref, but after THAT behavior, the official gave him a red card, meaning he had to leave the game! Clint was clearly upset at the ejection, as he had to be restrained by his teammates. He even sarcastically clapped in the face of another ref as he made his way off the field. Not cool, Clint! Seattle went on to lose the game, 3-1.
According to New York Times European Sports correspondent, Sam Borden, said that Clint’s antics could be considered “referee assault,”
which could net Clint a 3-month suspension. However, Sam expected that Clint will not suffer such an extreme punishment. What this means for Clint’s position as the Captain of the US Men’s National Team, we’ll have to wait and see.
Maybe Clint can take a lesson from LeBron James. Even though LeBron and his Cleveland Cavaliers were about to lose the 2015 NBA Championship to the Golden State Warriors, he still managed to be a good sport. In a great show of sportsmanship, LeBron congratulated Steph Curry and his teammates like a true gentleman!
What do you think about Clint’s actions, HollywoodLifers? Should he get punished for his actions?
