Mykki Blanco has been hiding a big secret for years…until now. The rapper made an emotional confession on Facebook June 12, revealing to his fans and followers that he’s HIV positive. Check out his message and find out why he’s waiting until now to confess.
“I’ve been HIV positive since 2011, my entire career,” he wrote. “f— stigma and hiding in the dark, this is my real life. I’m healthy and I’ve toured the world 3 times but I’ve been living in the dark, it’s time to actually be as punk as i say I am. no more living a lie. HAPPY PRIDE.”
It’s so incredibly brave of Mykki to be so open about this life-changing diagnosis, and he received a massive amount of support from his fans in response to the post. To one, he wrote back, “thank you, hiding, being afraid of sigma is exhausting, we are souls not images, thank you brother.”
However, he also acknowledged how this confession might have an affect on his career. “the music industry ain’t gonna like I admitted to this so if a curator could help me move more into the art world that would be awesome,” he posted. But whatever industry he ends up in, we just hope Mykki is able to do what he really loves.
Our thoughts are with Mykki as he continues to fight this terrible disease.
