This is just awesome. ‘Entertainment Weekly’ has just released the cover for their upcoming LGBT issue– their first in 15 years– and the cover star is none other than Laverne Cox, looking more gorgeous than ever, but duh.
For those who don’t know, June is LGBT Pride Month, and Entertainment Weekly is celebrating in a momentous manner: their June 19th cover, which will hit newsstands on June 12, features Orange is the New Black actress and transgender star, Laverne Cox. Laverne, 31, has gained acclaim for playing the lovable prison beautician, Sophia, on Orange, but it’s her contribution to the trans community which have made Laverne an icon. Check out what Laverne has to say about that lofty status, as well as her thoughts on Caitlyn Jenner!
Laverne knows that she has been anointed an icon, but she isn’t sure how she feels about it. “I just wonder, am I allowed to be a human being?” she said, speaking to Entertainment Weekly.
Speaking of being human, Laverne knows that she will be continually asked about Caitlyn, who very recently made her public debut to the world. Comparing her own journey to Caitlyn’s, she discussed how appreciative she is to have transitioned before she was famous, not having had to do so in the public eye.
“This is why I’m so grateful that I had the luxury of transitioning in private,” she said. “Because when you transition in the public eye, the transition becomes the story. I’m always disturbed when I see conversations about trans people that focus on surgery. But I believe Caitlyn will transcend this moment.”
Following the release of Caitlyn’s Vanity Fair photos, Laverne also took to her personal Tumblr to declare her elation for how far the trans movement has come. “I am so moved by all the love and support Caitlyn is receiving,” she wrote. “It feels like a new day, indeed, when a trans person can present her authentic self to the world for the first time and be celebrated for it so universally.”
What do you think of Laverne’s cover?
