I may be biased, but I think that the US Women’s Soccer Team is going to utterly own the 2015 World’s Cup. This star-studded team is going for their third World Cup victory, the first since 1999. Let me tell you why I think the US women are going to dominate!
Say it with me: U-S-A! U-S-A! After their 3-1 victory over Australia on June 8, the United States Women’s National Team proved why they’re THE top soccer squad in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. With a Gold Medal goalkeeper and one of the best Forwards in the game, I think Team USA is going to crush the competition!
There are 23 reasons that the Team USA is my favorite to win the World Cup: each member of the roster! One of this team’s best strengths is that each of the 23 squad members is a mind-blowingly good player. From Abby Wambach to Megan Rapinoe to Hope Solo – this team is bursting with talent!
Let’s talk about Hope. She is a Gold Medal Olympian and she has the record for US shutouts at 72. That means there are 72 games where she has not let a single ball go by her! She’s also a FIFA Women’s Golden Glove winner and regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the world. That alone is a reason why Team USA is a good bet to win the World Cup, but Hope won’t be alone! Team USA’s defenders, like Ali Kriger and Christie Rampone, will keep their opponents blocked and struggling to take a shot at the net.
On offense, the US has Abby Wambach. Abby is the all-time American International goal scorer — male or female — with 182 goals in 242 games! Abby is also ending her incredible career soon, so this is her last shot at winning the World Cup. There’s nothing like some added incentive to go out on top.
Even if Abby’s not playing, the team has arguably the best American Forward in soccer: Christen Press. Christen scored the final point in the US-Australian match. It was her first World Cup goal and it won’t be her last. She’s already won the Golden Boot while playing professionally in Sweden. I think she’s going to break out this year and will be the USA star to watch.
Though, if there’s anything that could possibly stop the US, it’s Team USA itself. On teams with a superstar player – like Lionel Messi or a Cristiano Ronaldo – the squad is built around that player. When you have 23 fantastic players and only 11 spots on the field, it’s a struggle to pick the right combination. Manager Jillian Ellis needs to come up with a way to use all these strong players at their best, knowing when to substitute tiring players with fresh blood.
I think they’ll work out the kinks in the next two games. Team USA faces Sweden on June 12 and Nigeria on June 16. They’ll advance to the next stage — they have made it to the semifinals in every Women’s World Cup to date — and after they gel completely, they’re going to be nearly unstoppable. Even with kinks, they won their game 3-1. Imagine how they’ll be when they’re running at 100%!
I think Team USA will raise the World Cup, HollywoodLifers. What do you think? Will Team USA go all the way?
