Who’s ready to get down with Jaden Smith? The ‘After Earth’ actor has joined the cast of Netflix’s upcoming musical drama TV series, ‘The Get Down,’ slated to debut in 2016. Find out all the details of his edgy new role!
Welcome to the dark side, Jaden Smith. The 16-year-old actor, has landed a recurring role in Baz Luhrmann‘s new hip hop drama, The Get Down, Netflix announced on June 9. The musical series, which takes place in 1970s New York City during the emergence of the hip hop scene, will show Jaden in an exciting role like we’ve never seen him in before. Here’s what we know!
As Jaden’s acting career continues to get hotter, fancy this. The Karate Kid actor will play Marcus “Dizzee” King, 18, in The Get Down, who is a talented and enigmatic graffiti writer raised in the South Bronx, according to our sister site Deadline. He will be part of the group of the rag-tag South Bronx teens that embody the show, which focuses on the rise of urban culture in the hip hop and punk scene. The television show will span across locations of the city from the Bronx tenements to the SoHo art scene, CBGBs to Studio 54 and the World Trade Center.
Jaden has already been hard at work on the show and is learning a serious new “skill set.” “He has begun developing his The Get Down skill set, even taking lessons from the legendary graffiti artist Lady Pink of ‘Wild Style’ fame, as well as steeping himself in the history and culture of the Bronx,” executive producer and creator Baz said. We can’t wait!
Baz, who is the mastermind behind The Great Gatsby and Romeo and Juliet, has been working on this project for ten years and is confident in Jaden’s ability to carry out his vision by portraying this misunderstood character.
“We as an audience have known Jaden since he was very young,” Baz continued. “Recently, Jaden has been seeking diverse and challenging roles and this is a testament to his passion to grow in the craft. We’re all very happy with the casting of Jaden in the role of ‘Dizzee’ Kipling, and with his addition, the Kipling family cast is now complete.”
The 13-episode series will also star Jimmy Smits, Herizen Guardiola, Justice Smith, Shameik Moor, Yahya Abdul-Mateen and Mamoudou Athie.
