It’s been sixteen years since the U.S. Women’s National Team has won a World Cup. Will they be able to snag the the coveted prize this year? The United States begins its 2015 Women’s World Cup quest on June 8 against Australia at Winnipeg’s Investors Group Field. You can be in on the action here!
Marking the first game for both teams, the United States ranks at number two in the world behind Germany, while Australia comes at number ten. There are a ton of amazing players to watch out for on the field. For Australia, Lisa De Vanna, is Australia’s most experienced player and will make her 100th appearance today with 35 goals under her belt. For the United States, there’s Carli Lloyd, who has 63 international goals under her belt, second to Abby Wambach who has scored the most goals — 182 to be exact — of any woman in international play. After winning two Olympic gold medals with the Americans, Abby is more determined than ever to win the World Cup, since she was defeated in 1999.
“I want to finish my career off on a high note, play in this World Cup and bring home the World Cup to the United States,” Abby said, according to OnlyGators.com. “That would be absolutely a dream come true and a perfect way to end a career.”
The game kicks off on June 8 at 7:30pm ET on Fox Sports 1.
