Minnie Driver Screws Up Singing ‘Star Spangled Banner,’ Fans Freak — Watch

There’s one thing you don’t do when you’re in America, Minnie Driver — mess up the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’! The British singer learned that the hard way while trying to belt it out at an LA Dodgers game on June 6, and fans totally freaked. Better luck next time, girl!

Minnie Driver, 45, was totally killing it while singing the “Star Spangled Banner” at an LA Dodgers game on Saturday, June 6, until she made a major flub not once, but twice — she sang the wrong lyrics! If there’s something that Americans are completely protective of (especially at sporting events), it’s their national anthem, and they let Minnie have it. But the singer took it with humor.

While singing her heart out (and showing off her beautiful voice), Minnie sang two lines of the “Star Spangled Banner” wrong — and it angered some fans enough to suggest deportation! “What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?” turned into “What so proudly we we watched…” And later in the song, “Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,” was sung as “Oh say can that…”

Not terrible, but enough to incite criticism. To make matters worse, the lyrics to the song were up on a jumbotron right on the field. But as you can see in the video, Minnie’s totally feeling the music and has her eyes closed the whole time. While she still got cheers at the stadium after her performance (it’s the polite thing to do!), fans on social media were ruthless. She took the jab in stride, brushing off her critics and joking that she was about to be deported in “half an hour” for her transgression. That’s the spirit, Minnie!

Minnie’s Not The Only Star To Mess Up The National Anthem

After her night at Dodgers Stadium, Minnie joins the ranks of artists like Christina Aguilera, James Taylor and Cyndi Lauper — immensely talented singers who all forgot the lyrics to the “Star Spangled Banner.” They all faced their own criticism for doing so, and returned from it gracefully; Minnie will likely do the same. Now it’s just about getting the haters off her back!

HollywoodLifers, do you think Minnie deserved so much heat for messing up the national anthem? Sound off below and be sure to take our poll!
