Gutted. In a huge upset at the Men’s French Open Final at Roland Garros, Stanislas Wawrinka was crowned the winner after beating Novak Djokovic 3 sets to 1!
What a shocker! Stanislas Wawrinka, 30, caused a tremendous upset in the men’s French Open final by beating the world number one, Novak Djokovic, 28, in a gripping tennis match. Find out all the details!
Stanislas defeated Novak 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Novak looked well on his way to victory after winning the first set, but his Swiss counterpart fired back, robbing Novak of a Grand Slam. Stanislas smashed 59 winners past Novak, who only managed 30 winners and made an astonishing 41 unforced errors.
One collapse saw Novak leading 3-0 in the third set, only to let Wawrinka back in the game at 3-3. He then ended up losing the set 6-3, which showed just how bad things were for the normally so composed champ. Novak’s day was completely summed up when, on a break point in the final game, he labored and Stanislas broke back and sealed the title with a backhand winner down the line. It was a shot worthy of his Swiss compatriot Roger Federer, 33, who must have been surprised by the outcome of this one.
The win for Stanislas means he’s the first man since Matts Wilander in 1998 to sweep the men’s title after being its junior champion. It’s also Stanislas’ second Grand Slam title – he famously topped Rafael Nadal, 29, at the Australian Open last year.
Stanislas Wawrinka Sportingly Told Novak Djokovic He’ll Win The French Open One Day
After the match, Stanislas addressed the crowd and Novak’s failure to lift a Grand Slam in sporting fashion. “I’m sure you’ll win Roland Garros,” he graciously told the disappointed Novak. What a good sport!
