When Evan Young wanted to come out as gay during his Valedictorian Speech at his high school graduation, he was shut down by the school’s principal. However, Evan got the last laugh by appearing on ‘The Nightly Show’ and delivering his banned speech to the world!
Revenge is a dish best served — on national television! However, Evan Young, 18, wasn’t looking for revenge. He just wanted to give his Valedictorian speech the way he wrote it, including the part where he revealed he was gay. After being banned from speaking at his high school graduation, Evan was finally gave his speech, thanks to Larry Wilmore and The Nightly Show. Click to watch!
Evan appeared, in gap and gown, on the June 5 episode of The Nightly Show. He delivered the speech he was banned from giving because he refused to remove the part that referenced his sexuality. So, instead of addressing the 2015 Graduating Class of Twin Peaks Charter Academy in Boulder, Colorado, Evan spoke to a national audience! Evan was a pro, even dropping some of the funniest lines of the episode:
“Since we’re never going to see each other again, I thought I should share several of my deepest and darkest secrets. First, I dislike doing homework. Not all homework is bad, sometimes it’s helpful. But like the Heimlich Maneuver, you’re only supposed to do it when it’s absolutely necessary. Otherwise you’re just going to make children throw up for no reason.”
Hilarious! Evan went on to reveal some of his more secrets, including the biggest one of all: he’s gay. The announcement got a round of applause from the studio audience as it would have at his graduation ceremony.
Evan ended on a positive note, encouraging everyone to look past their differences to come together in harmony. It’s a shame that his principal, who banned him from speaking, didn’t see that point. Thankfully, Larry and The Nightly Show were able to help Evan’s message get out. The Nightly Show even posted Evan’s speech in its entirety, so you can watch his awesome commencement for yourself!
It’s been a phenomenal year for High School graduation ceremonies. In addition to Evan giving his speech to a worldwide audience, the Kahuku High School graduation class gave an incredible performance that had them dance in unison to a medley of hit songs from Wiz Khalifa, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus! They got funky, they got emotional and they got down with their bad selves!
What did you think about Evan’s speech, HollywoodLifers?
