ABC Family’s exciting new series ‘Becoming Us,’ which will feature a transgender parent and son, premieres on June 8. Before the big debut, we’ve got everything you need to know right here!
The transgender movement is stepping into the spotlight in a major way. Along with this week’s introduction of Caitlyn Jenner, a new reality series is set to debut and it’s all about what it means to be trans. In Becoming Us, which will begin on ABC Family on June 8, the story of two typical midwestern teenagers (who are dating) will be told. Less typical? Both of their fathers are transitioning into women. The series is sure to generate buzz– and perhaps some controversy. Here’s what you should know before the premiere!
In Becoming Us, which is the latest from producer Ryan Seacrest, we see the story of a trans parent, Carly, primarily through the eyes of her son, Ben. Ben is 16, and his parents are getting divorced.
That alone would be enough to make any teenage boy act out, right? Well, Ben is experiencing circumstances a bit more complicated than that. His father (which is what Ben calls Carly in the show), is becoming a woman and, interestingly, Ben’s girlfriend, Danielle, also has a father who is in the process of becoming a woman.
Throughout the series, we will see Ben struggle with his father’s transformation. This will include his weakened performance in school and inability to be on time to, well, anything. Certainly, it seems that the series will attempt to depict both sides of the parent-child relationship, as the former goes through the biggest change in her life, while the latter must also adapt.
In one poignant scene, Carly explains to Ben that she will undergo surgery. Ben muses that, “the person that made me will not have the thing that made me… That is weird.”
Will you tune in to Becoming Us?
