Finally, someone is giving poor Barbie a break and allowing the doll to wear flats for once in her life! Once known for her killer heels, Barbie is getting some options in footwear — and rocking them!

Barbie has been a staple for girls around the world since 1959, and one thing has stayed constant that whole time: her pointy little feet mean she can only wear high heels, platformed sandals and boots! But thanks to a brand new change to the doll’s legs, announced by Mattel on Thursday, June 4, Barbie is finally going to have the option of rocking a pair of flat shoes whenever she chooses. This tiny fashionista is only getting more fashionable!

Barbie has been an astronaut, a veterinarian, and even the president! But one thing she hasn’t been able to do is wear comfortable footwear. A little impractical for saving the world, don’t you think? Mattel’s announcement means that Barbie can get a little rest and relaxation by hanging up her heels in favor of comfy ballet flats, sandals and Mary Janes thanks to new “adjustable ankles.”

What does that mean? Simply take Barbie’s pointed foot and pull it into a flattened position, so it looks more like a regular, human foot. Slip on her cute new footwear, and she’s ready to take on the world! Of course, if heels are your thing, the key word here is “adjustable.” Barbie is still allowed to don a pair of stilettos whenever she wants — and that’s the wonderful thing. She’s finally got some options on the table!

The adjustable ankles and range of flat shoes (we’re sure there’s more coming — Barbie has never been content with limited choices) were flaunted on Barbie’s official Instagram page. The infamous doll and her besties showed off their gams and a wide variety of shoes — heels and flats alike — making it known that both options were totally valid. Go girls!
