Lincoln Chafee is officially in the race to become the next President of the United States. The Democratic politician announced he’s in the running for the 2016 presidential election on June 3 — so here are 5 things to know about him!
Lincoln Chafee became the fourth major politician to enter the White House race on June 3. The 62-year-old Rhode Island native is no stranger to politics. 1) He went to horse-farrier school.
After graduating from Brown University, Lincoln attended Montana State University and mastered the skill of a farrier — someone who specializes in horse-shoeing. He spent several years working at racetracks across the U.S. and Canada!
2. He’s a Democrat from Rhode Island — but he wasn’t always a Democrat.
Lincoln started out as a Republican when he began his career in politics in 1985. He then left the Republican party in 2007 and became an Independent. He was actually being persuaded by Martin O’Malley, a rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, to switch parties, before officially becoming a Democrat in May 2013.
3. He’s served as a Mayor, a Senator and a Governor.
Lincoln has done it all. He served as the Mayor of Warwick from 1992-1999, before taking his father’s place as a U.S. Senator after his death, a position he held until 2007. He then became the 74th Governor of Rhode Island in 2011.
4. He supports same-sex marriage.
Lincoln is open about his support for marriage equality. In fact, Rhode Island legalized same-sex marriage while he was governor. He also supports abortion rights and the separation between church and state.
5. He has a wife and three kids.
He’s a family man! Lincoln married his wife Stephanie in 1990, and together they have three kids, Louisa, Thea and Caleb.
