During Kendrick Lamar’s concert at the Sweetlife Festival on May 30, the hip-hop star pulled a crying fan on stage only to learn that his music had once saved her from taking her own life. Click inside to watch the powerful moment.
Kendrick Lamar, 27, is literally saving lives through his powerful music. After Kendrick met a fan who shared that she turned to his music to fight her severe depression and suicidal thoughts, he made the 16-year-old’s wildest dreams come true in such a big way. Find out how it all went down!
We love a positive story like this one! Kendrick pulled a young girl on-stage after he saw her crying in the front row during his festival performance. “I’m at the end of the show, and I see this young lady crying, and I’m thinking, ‘She must be really going through something right now,’” Kendrick told MTV News when recalling the amazing moment he shared with the fan. “Then I start hearing her murmur with her lips, ‘You saved my life.’ So I’m like, ‘Damn. This is serious. This is not for play, why she’s out here right now. She came to see the person that actually helped her get through a life, through music.’”
Once the fan was able to hug Kendrick, she shared that she had nearly taken her own life but it was his music that pushed her forward. “When I was 15, I was diagnosed with severe depression, and Kendrick got me through it,” the young fan explained. “And I couldn’t have done it without him. I listened to his music over and over and there were nights where I thought I was going to end it all, and I didn’t, and I think that’s because his words impacted me in a way that no other artist has ever done. I can’t thank him enough.”
Wow. That is such a beautiful full circle moment for the young girl! After Kendrick pulled her on stage, the two embraced each other, and later they had a long meeting backstage once the show ended. “It’s more than just me bringing you onstage — I actually feel you. Because that’s why I do my music,” Kendrick told her. Watch the clip above. The moment happens around the 4:00 mark.
