The candidates keep on coming! On June 1, the South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham became the latest politician to announce that he’s running for president in 2016!
Senator Lindsey Graham, 59, must have felt left out after seeing Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum and George Pataki all announce their 2016 Presidential Campaigns. The South Carolina politician announced his own presidential campaign on June 1, stating that he wants to replace the outgoing President Barack Obama in 2016.
Though Lindsey had hinted he was going to run for a while, he made it official on June 1, reports the Huffington Post. Lindsey announced his plans to run at an event in his hometown of Central, South Carolina. “I’m Lindsey Graham,” the Senator told all his supporters, “and I’m running for President.”
Wow! The 2016 Presidential race is getting overstuffed with candidates! Lindsey is the latest, but he’s likely not the last. Lindsey attended the University of South Carolina, attaining his law degree. After graduating, he practiced law for the U.S. Air Force. He served the South Carolina Air National Guard from 1989 to 1995.
His political career started in 1992, when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994. He was reelected four times – in 1996, 1998 and 2000. In 2002, when Senator Strom Thurmond retired, Lindsey succeeded to replace him. He was reelected to the Senate in both 2008 and 2014.
2016: The Candidates So Far
In addition to Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum and George Pataki, Lindsey will face Carly Fiorna, Ben Carson, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz for the Republican nomination for president. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have both announced campaigns.
