The support for Caitlyn Jenner’s debut has been outstanding! Now, EPSN will honor the Gold Medalist’s bravery by presenting her the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at this year’s ESPYs!
When Caitlyn Jenner, 65, introduced herself to the world on June 1, she found an overwhelmingly positive response. Fans and celebs flocked to offer their support for her. The sports world also showed love for Caitlyn, as it was announced Caitlyn will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYs!
The news that Caitlyn would receive the award at the 2015 Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards was announced in the June 2015 Vanity Fair article, and confirmed by CNN’s Brian Stelter on Twitter. The July ceremony will also be the first major public appearance for Caitlyn.
“In the past few months, the overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world for my journey has been incredible,” Caitlyn said in a statement. “However, being honored with this award, which is named after one of my heroes, is truly special. For the first time this July, I will be able to stand as my true self in front of my peers.”
This is incredible! As the highest profile transgender athlete — a gold medal Olympian — Caitlyn is a perfect candidate for the Arthur Ashe Courage award. It’s named after the first black player to play for the US Davis Cup Team and the only black man ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the US Open or the Australian open. Both athletes faced their struggles and found the courage to remain true to themselves.
What’s even better than being honored for her bravery and contribution to the sports world, all 10 of Caitlyn’s children and stepchildren will reportedly be onstage when she accepts her award! That’s so wonderful! Past Arthur Ashe award winners have been Michael Sam, Billie Jean King and Muhammad Ali. Watch Caitlyn Jenner accept her award on July 15 @ 8pm on ABC.
Caitlyn’s debut was welcomed with open arms by the celebrity world. Ellen Degeneres said “my hope for the world is that we can all be as brave as Caitlyn Jenner” while Sam Smith, Kat Dennings, Brad Goreski, Gigi Hadid, Anna Kendrick and so many more joined in to welcome Caitlyn to the world with love and support.
