It’s a tie — again! After three days of intense competition, Vanya Shivashankar and Gokul Venkatachalam tied as champions of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 28. Congrats to Vanya and Gokul!
Vanya Shivashakar, 13, and Gokul Venkatachalam, 14, are your 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee C-H-A-M-P-S! For the second year in a row, the National Spelling Bee ended in a tie. Vanya and Gokul defeated 283 spellers over three days in order to be the last two standing on the stage in National Harbor, Maryland on May 28. Find out their winning words!
Vanya and Gokul proved they are forces to be reckoned with in the world of spelling. By the 20th and final round, the competition came down to one word for both Vanya and Gokul. Vanya correctly spelled the word “scherenschnitte” to seal her win, CNN reports. Gokul correctly spelled the word “nunatak.”
Over the course of the spelling bee, Vanya had to spell words like “thamakau” and “hippocrepiform,” while Gokul got equally hard words like “sprachgefühl,” “pipsissewa” and “pyrrhuloxia.” We’re getting a headache just thinking about spelling those words! As a result of their epic win, Vanya and Gokul each took home a huge trophy, a $35,000 cash prize, a $2,500 U.S. savings bond, a complete reference library and more.
Gokul hails from Chesterfield, Mo. Vanya is from Olathe, Kansas. The 13-year-old is riding high on victory this year. She took home the top spot on Lifetime’s Child Genius this year. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is also a family affair. Vanya’s sister, Kavya, won the 2009 bee, according to USA Today. Before Vanya’s 2015 win, no sibling of a former champion had ever won.
Once again, congrats to both winners! HollywoodLifers, tell us what you think! Were you rooting for Vanya and Gokul? Are you surprised by another tie? Let us know!
