Tori Kelly is taking the music world by storm, but getting here has been years in the making! She actually participated in Season 9 of ‘American Idol,’ but, shockingly, didn’t make the live portion of the show…and HollywoodLife.com has EXCLUSIVELY learned why.
Can you believe Tori Kelly, 22, once competed on American Idol…and didn’t win?! Knowing what an amazing singer she is, that’s hard to imagine. But in 2010, Tori didn’t even make it to the Top 24 live performance section on the hit Fox series — and it wasn’t because of a lack of talent! HollywoodLife.com has the scoop on why Tori really didn’t continue her Idol journey.
Tori Kelly On American Idol: Why She Never Made The Lives Shows
“When you get to live shows, things get pretty intense, and you have to sign a contract with Simon,” an insider explained to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “Simon wasn’t really a big supporter of Tori and her voice, so she didn’t want to be bound to a written contract with the American Idol management company.”
Still, Tori continued pursuing singing and songwriting, and although she began to grow frustrated with her stagnant career, she kept sharing her videos on YouTube. Everything turned around in 2013, when Scooter Braun, who manages stars like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, discovered her in a coffee shop.
Tori Kelly Finally Gives Into Scooter Braun: How Her Career Skyrocketed
“Tori said no to Scooter at first,” our source revealed. “She was skeptical, and it took him six months to finally convince her to work with him.”
And it’s all paying off! Under Scooter’s leadership, she signed with Capitol Records, and will release her full album in June 2015.
Tori actually just performed the album’s first single, “Nobody Love,” at the Billboard Music Awards on May 17 and absolutely OWNED IT, commanding the stage with her guitar and amazing voice. We cannot WAIT to hear more from her!
