On tonight’s ’19 Kids & Counting’ finale special, we got to take a look back at what a monumental year the Duggar family had. We also were treated to a few courtship secrets!

On the May 19 episode of 19 Kids & Counting, the Duggars courtships were broken down by each couple. TLC took to the streets to ask a handful of random people if they knew what courting meant and if they would be on board with the idea. Let’s just say the answers were very interesting.

’19 Kids & Counting’ Recap: Courting Dos & Don’ts

Tonight the Duggar family broke down the tradition of courting. To our surprise when TLC took to the streets to ask strangers if they knew what courting was — most didn’t. One person said, “Does it mean wearing long dresses?” While another blatantly said, “I’ve never heard of courting.” Dating with a purpose was the common definition with the Duggar children. “First you’re friends, then you court, then you get engaged, then you get married, and then your best friends,” one Duggar revealed.

The Duggars broke down the meaning about asking fathers to court daughters. Both Ben and Derek went right to Jim Bob to ask to court his daughters, because his approval was the right thing to do. Once the courting begins, chaperones need to get involved. All of the older Duggar children and both Michelle and Jim Bob have played the role of chaperone numerous times. When Ben was courting Jessa, Jim Bob and his wife were included in the group text messages between the two young love birds. While that may be awkward to most, it was normal to them. They also went on double dates with the parents, and even a triple date at one time with Jill, Derek, Jim Bob & Michelle.

Chaperons, Side Hugs & Babies

When TLC asks people on the street about the idea of chaperones, it was a mixed response. While some thought the idea was ridiculous and awkward, others think it’s a great idea to make sure nothing bad happens. The Duggars believe chaperones will keep you in line and stick with the rules. They will keep you in check and not let you give in to the sexual predicaments that would normally arise in dating.

So what about all those side hugs? The Duggars think it’s not sexual but allows you to show a little bit of intimacy. They believe guys are stimulating by hand holding and kissing, so you want to put a boundary there so no one is tempted. People on the street didn’t share this idea and their reactions were pretty similar that there should be kissing and hand holding before marriage. “Saving your first kiss until your wedding day is a bit unrealistic nowadays,” one person said. Another said, “Saving it would be cool, but that’s kind of impossible.

The Duggars also recommend that you be prepared to be parents right away, because after you’re married they believe it’s only a matter of time before you’re blessed with a baby. It wasn’t long for Jill and Derick to get pregnant or for Josh and Anna. And now, Ben and Jessa are also expecting. Who will be next>

So much has happened this season, one only knows what is in store for the next season of 19 Kids & Counting!
