Taye Diggs is gettin’ his Broadway groove back! The actor, who last appeared on Broadway in 2003, will return to the stage to play the title character in ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch.’
After rumors had been circulating, on May 18 it was officially confirmed that Taye Diggs will return to the Broadway stage in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, beginning performances on July 22. Taye will replace the show’s current star, Darren Criss, in the role that was originated in 2014 by Neil Patrick Harris. The talented triple threat was last seen on Broadway in 2003 in the blockbuster musical Wicked (in which he starred opposite ex-wife Idina Menzel), and he most famously originated the role of Benjamin Coffin III in the original Broadway cast of Rent in 1996.
Taye Diggs In ‘Hedwig & The Angry Inch’
After more than a decade away from Broadway, focusing on television and film, Taye is stepping into the high, high heels of Hedwig. The 44-year-old will be the sixth person to take on the role in this production, and historically, he will be the first African American to take to play the role in New York.
In the fourth wall breaking musical, Hedwig tells the story of the titular character, the lead singer of a German rock band who has undergone a botched sex change operation, hence the “angry inch.”
In a statement, the production’s lead producer, David Binder, said, “Taye is fantastic — he has theater cred, he has pop culture cred, he can sing, he can act, he can dance, he’s smart and he’s sexy. That’s why we cast him.”
Hedwig has a book by John Cameron Mitchell (who played the role prior to Darren) and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. It won the Tony Award in 2014 for Best Revival of a Musical in 2014.
Do you guys think Taye will make a sass-tastic Hedwig? Or is it a bizarre casting?
