Spoiler alert: if you haven’t watched the May 14th season finale of ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ I wouldn’t keep reading!
After six seasons, it’s all come to this: Nina Dobrev‘s last episode. Without Elena, many wondered what direction The Vampire Diaries would head in. But we’ll get to that. For now, let’s talk that finale, and why Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena deserved a much greater goodbye — especially for the Delena fans.
‘The Vampire Diaries’: Delena’s Ending Wasn’t Right For The End of Season 6
In case you missed it, Elena was not killed in the TVD finale, but instead put under a spell where her life was linked to Bonnie’s which ultimately met she’s in a coma until Bonnie dies in 60-70 years. I don’t love that idea, but that’s not the point.
The epic love story of this show and especially the last few seasons was Damon and Elena. Sure Stefan (Paul Wesley) was the reason they got together to begin with and ultimately a best friend to her, but it was Damon in the end. Plus, Stefan even admits that they were not soulmates, and that she’s more important to him because she brought him closer to his brother again.
So, why didn’t Damon and Elena get that goodbye scene that made everyone tear up? It was Elena’s emotional “I Love You’s” to Stefan that made me cry in the finale. Damon and Elena briefly talked and shared a well-rounded flashback-to-their-first-dance dance in the street, but where was the emotional “I can’t live without you” speech?
I Don’t Want To Be Let Off The Hook
As I usually do, I compared this to the end of Dawson’s Creek (which Julie Plec also worked on). Joey’s last scene with Dawson, watching their relatives climb up that latter and leaning their heads together, may have been heart wrenching and perfect — but the scene with Pacey in the kitchen? That was the emotional, love story. Joey and Dawsons got the BFF ending, but the “I don’t want to be let off the hook” was saved for the epic, show ending romance.
Delena fans, those who fell in love with Damon with Elena, deserved a better, more epic goodbye in the finale. We got that epic speech from Damon in the penultimate, but where was that final goodbye?
Alright guys, I want to know what you think. Do you agree? Do you think Delena’s goodbye should have been bigger? Or are you happy with it? Let me know!
