Say it ain’t so! After nearly three decades voicing some of the most prominent characters on ‘The Simpsons,’ Harry Shearer has confirmed that he will not return to the show for its 27th season.
While the news that The Simpsons has been renewed for both 27th and 28th seasons has fans giddy, it’s not all great: Harry Shearer, who has been aboard the animated classic since the beginning and voices several key characters including Mr. Burns and Ned Flanders, has announced that he will no longer be part of the series when it returns for new episodes. We know, devastating. So is the plan to kill off all of his characters? We’ve got the answers!
‘The Simpsons’: Harry Shearer Quitting The Show
Harry Shearer took to Twitter on May 13 to share the news that he had decided not to renew his contract with The Simpsons. The news is pretty major considering that Harry has voiced several characters on the long running series since it began way back in 1989. Along with Mr. Burns and Ned, he also brings to life Principal Skinner and Kent Brockman.
Looking at the Tweets which Harry posted to reveal his exit, it seems that his departure might not be completely amicable. In a first Tweet, he apparently quoted the lawyer of executive producer James L. Brooks which said, “show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best.”
In a second Tweet, Harry wrote, “This because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best.”
Hm. To borrow a phrase from Mr. Burns: not so excellent.
Will Harry’s Characters Be Killed Off?
Obviously, with Harry leaving the series, the question looms as to whether his characters will also exit the series.
Well, for those of you who adore Ned diddly-doo Flanders, fear not. Harry’s characters will not be killed off of the series because he is leaving. Rather, they will be voiced by new voiceover actors.
In a statement, executive producer Al Jean said, “We do not plan to kill off characters like Burns and Flanders but will recast with the finest voiceover talent available.”
Well, that’s a relief, but still a major bummer that Harry will no longer be a part of the iconic series!
Are you sad that Harry is leaving the show?
